Item Overview

Handheld electronic football game produced by Coleco, titled Electronic Quarterback. This example represents a less commonly encountered production variation distinguished by its white control buttons, differing from the standard red and blue button configuration typically associated with this model. Button color variations are generally attributed to early manufacturing runs or component sourcing changes during initial production.

The original box is present and includes a printed “E” marking on the end flap. While the precise meaning of this marking is undocumented in known Coleco literature, similar markings are sometimes associated with internal factory identifiers such as early packaging runs, export designation, or sample/example distribution. No definitive factory explanation is known.

The game unit itself is new unused, we took the liberty of opening it up to ensure unit was operational and to document unit variation. The combination of the white button variant and the box end-flap marking distinguishes this example from more commonly encountered versions.

Historical Context

During the late 1970s, handheld electronic sports games became a significant segment of the toy market following the success of early football-based electronic games. Coleco introduced Electronic Quarterback as its competing entry, offering portable gameplay with LED graphics. Variations in button color and packaging are known among surviving examples and are generally attributed to production changes, though detailed factory records have not been published.
